    CommentaireMême collation et même contenu que dans les éditions de 1598, 1605 et 1616 (nos 162, 168 et 178), mais la composition typographique est différente, et le titre est imprimé en noir et rouge.
    Note sur les cinq éditions du « Dictionarium undecim linguarum » (nos 152, 162, 168, 178 et 186) :
    Ces éditions marquent un apogée, puisque les éditions postérieures reviennent à huit langues. Leur importance se manifeste par un fort coefficient de conservation des exemplaires : 390 pour ces cinq éditions, sans compter ceux qui ont échappé à l’enquête. Leur présentation offre de telles similitudes que l’identification d’exemplaires souvent incomplets de la date (qui ne figure qu’au colophon) est rendue difficile. L’édition de 1590 est la plus facile à distinguer ; contrairement aux autres, la page de titre n’y porte pas de marque, et la collation est différente. Parmi les quatre autres, l’édition de 1627 se reconnait aisément parce que sa page de titre est imprimée en deux couleurs. La terminaison des lignes 8 à 12 distingue la page de titre de l’édition de 1616 de celle des éditions de 1598 et 1605. Malgré une composition typographique différente, les pages de titre de ces deux éditions ne se distinguent que par la terminaison de la 12e ligne : « ut hac- » en 1598, « vt hac- » en 1605. Pour ces raisons, des exemplaires appartenant aux bibliothèques suivantes n’ont pas pu être identifiés : Catania BU, Firenze B Medicea, Linz Studien B, Milano B Ambrosiana, Roma B Angelica, Szeged UK, Wepion Inst. S. Robert.
    D’autre part, la mention <jam septimo » au titre de l’édition de 1627 laisse supposer qu’il y a eu sept éditions, et non pas cinq, du « Dictionarium undecim linguarum » ; il faut plutôt penser que cette mention fait allusion à des éditions antérieures d’Henricpetri, car il serait extraordinaire que deux éditions aient complétement disparu alors que les exemplaires des autres subsistent en grand nombre. Il existe pourtant deux exemplaires incomplets du colophon, dont la page de titre ne semble pas correspondre exactement à celle des éditions connues : Karlsruhe LB (59 C 12 ; dans une reliure datée de 1608), Rimini BC (CT 739). Les références de Gallina (p. 119) à des éditions de 1594 et 1681 sont erronées.

    L’IA, qui reprend toutes les éditions jusqu’en 1600, est moins complet que LABARRE du point de vue des exemplaires.
    Nous décrivons ici la première édition contenant l’italien parue dans l’aire francophone (Lyon, 1559) et la première édition contenant conjointement l’italien et le français. Nous donnons ensuite la liste des éditions où figurent les deux langues : pour la description de ces éditions et pour la localisation des exemplaires, l’on se reportera à l’ouvrage de Labarre. Remarquons que dans la zone francophone il n’y a eu qu’une édition — celle de Lyon 1559 — comportant l’italien sans le français.

    Author : Ambrosius Calepinus - Ambrogio Calepino, commonly known by the Latin form of his name, Calepinus, was an Italian lexicographer.
    Calepino was born and died in Bergamo. He entered the Augustinian Order in 1458.
    His Latin dictionary appeared first in 1502 at Reggio. It was reprinted many times during the 16th century, Aldi alone producing no fewer than 18 editions from 1542 to 1592. Later editions were considerably enlarged. To the Latin of the original were added equivalents in other languages. Thus we have the Basle edition (1590) which contains eleven languages : « Ambrosii Calepini dictionarium undecim linguarum : respondent autem latinis vocabulis hebraica, græca, gallica, italica, germanica, belgica, hispanica, polonica, ungarica, anglica ».
    The edition in seven languages by Jacopo Facciolati (Pavia, 1718) with the assistance of Egidio Forcellini, was reprinted many times. Calepinus became a common name, a synonym of dictionary or lexicon, and we find titles like the following : Septem linguarum calepinus, hoc est, lexicon latinum. Calepino also wrote the life of John Bonus of Mantua which is found in the « Acta Sanctorum » for the 22nd of October (Oct. IX, 748-767).

    Book Details : This important Latin dictionary with multilingual definitions (Hebrew, Greek, German, English, Spanish, Polish, Hungarian, Italian) is considered a forerunner of the modern dictionary.
    Condition / Notes : This antique Latin-language dictionary is bound in blind-stamped vellum with raised bands. A brown leather label with the handwritten words « Calepino / Dictionary » appears on the spine. The book shows external wear, with rubbing, cracking and light soiling to the covers. Loss of material can be seen along the bottom edges of this tome, as well as, more moderately, along edges of raised bands. This volume lacks its metal clasps. The binding is firm. Rippling and slight staining appear at the front and end of this volume. The previous owner’s name and the date of 1884 appear on the black page opposite of the title page. The title page shows repair to the bottom left-hand side. An annotation and the date of 1628 appear at the bottom margin. The bottom half of the inside margin of the preliminary pages and a number of pages of text display a water marking. Some pages also have tide markings to the side margins. The pages of text display occasional foxing and age toning. The text appears in double columns. This work is illustrated with the publisher’s device (on the title page and the final blank page) , head- and tailpieces, a historiated initial on the first page of text and initials with ornamental designs.
